On March 2, 2007, I spent the majority of the day at the Mid/South Farm & Gin Show in Memphis, TN. This was the 55th Annual Show with more than 450 exhibits spotlighting all major Mid/South crops; as well as the latest in farm equipment, chemicals, products and services. For more than half a century, this show has been the place for farmers and ginners to get a look at the latest products and for everyone in the family to have a good time.
n addition to exhibitors, there were numerous special seminars. “Cotton Marketing Strategies”, was presented by Mike Stevens of Mandeville, LA, who is a cotton specialist for SFS Futures, the commodity division of Swiss Financial Services. Representative Mike Ross, democrat from Arkansas, a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, spoke regarding the potential impact on mid/south agriculture as relates to what new energy legislation and the move to bio-fuels will mean to crop prices, crop shifts, etc. These were two of the key seminars, and there were numerous others related to various current topics of importance to those involved in mid/south agriculture, particularly for 2007.
This mega farm show is co-sponsored by the Southern Cotton Ginners Association, who also holds their annual meeting in conjunction with the show. The ginners association scheduled a number of speakers addressing specific cotton issues. These discussions were open to the general public.
The 400+ exhibitors came from 40+ states and several foreign countries, and 95% of the show space is devoted to agriculture-related products and services. Many of the exhibitors were displaying the latest technology and new and upcoming products and services.
The projection of attendance at this mega show was between 15 and 20,000 people. In the past, visitors have come from every state and several foreign countries. Many of the major agribusiness representatives and related government agencies were available for in-depth discussions. This was certainly an event that anyone involved in agriculture could learn more about the industry, as well as have a good time. There are a lot of things to do and see in Memphis, and plenty of great places to eat. There were also several banquets and dances in connection with this event and available for attendees.
