8 Steps to Prepare in Hurricane Season

1. Review your policy and coverage with Manry Rawls. Call your agent today at 757-562-6131 to make sure you’re prepared.

2. Take a written inventory of personal possessions. Most people couldn’t list all the items in their living room without looking. Make a written inventory now so later you’ll know exactly what’s been lost. A video or digital record also becomes extremely useful during the claims process. Store your written and visual inventories in a safe place away from your home, such as a safe deposit box. Keep a copy of the written inventory at home for reference. Update both copies at least once a year, and whenever you make a major purchase.

You can download free home inventory software from the Insurance Information Institute at www.knowyourstuff.org

3. Pay bills before the storm. You may want to set up an automatic payment plan to ensure that your payments are always made on time.

4. Check your available credit. Make sure you have a credit card with at least $1,000 available. Get receipts for cash purchases before and after the storm.

5. Withdraw money. Financial institutions normally close for at least two days after a direct hit. ATM’s could be out of order even longer, so withdraw some cash before a pending hurricane.

6. Secure your home. Fortify your roof, windows, garage, and entry doors. _e Institute for Business & Home Safety offers a comprehensive preparation guide.

7. Have your policy information ready. Write down or memorize your policy number and our toll free number, 800-666-6131 – in case you need to report a claim.

8. Safeguard your records. If you don’t have a safety deposit box for your important insurance and financial documents, you may want to consider a weather proof safety box - available at most hardware stores.
