Have a family plan that covers what to do in case of a storm and how you would survive for a week or longer without electricity or aid. Find forms at www.readyvirginia.gov/makeaplan.
Check your insurance policy to make sure you have sufficient coverage. If there is a risk of storm surge, ask your agent about buying federal flood insurance. Regular policies don’t cover flood losses.
Make an inventory of your possessions with photos or video.
Have a plan for people with a disability or serious illness or those who need life-support equipment.
Plan for your pets. It’s best to take them with you if you evacuate, but if you go to a public shelter they likely will not be allowed. Instead, leave them with a friend or board them at a kennel. If you leave them at home, provide ample food and water.
Gather important papers such as insurance and financial records, birth certificates and lists of possessions. Place them in a waterproof container.
Take in loose outdoor items that might become airborne during a storm.
